Of the 545.01 million yen allocated to Nagano University from 2019 to 2026, 457.78 million yen consisted of direct research expenses and 87.23 million yen of indirect expenses and general administrative expenses.

Since fiscal year 2019, external competitive research funding obtained by the Institute of Freshwater Biology has accounted for approximately 74% of the total external competitive research funding obtained by Nagano University as a whole (based on the average share of funds allocated to Nagano University during fiscal years 2019–2024). The institute’s total research funding has also been equivalent to approximately 39% of the operating subsidy provided to Nagano University by its establishing local government (based on average research funding during fiscal years 2019–2023). All researchers and research support staff at the Institute of Freshwater Biology are employed using external competitive research funds. General administrative expenses cover approximately 90% of the institute’s utility costs, while indirect expenses are used, among other purposes, to cover the employment costs of contract staff at the Shimonogo Campus.
