Preliminary survey of satellite tags off the coast of Lake Hamana to study eel migration

IFB

The Institute of Freshwater Biology is investigating the spawning migration of Japanese eel using pop-up satellite tags as part of research for the International Fisheries Resource Change Mechanism Analysis Project. In this project, we are working with Little Leonardo and the Faculty of Engineering at Shinshu University to improve the world’s smallest new satellite tag for Japanese eel and to conduct field surveys. This time, we went by boat to the Shizuoka coast on August 24, 2021, and conducted preliminary experiments such as checking the pressure resistance of the satellite tag. The tag was submerged at a depth of 1,000 meters and programmed to be released three days later. It then surfaced as scheduled and data transmission to the ARGOS satellite was confirmed, making the preliminary experiment a success.
