Professor Hiroshi Hakoyama Attends River Environment Conservation Monitor Conference and Conducts Field Inspection of Chikuma River
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the Chikuma River Bureau are carrying out restoration work for the Chikuma River disaster caused by Typhoon Hagibis. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism is promoting river development that takes into account the natural environment, and the River Environment Conservation Monitor Conference is a forum for experts to express their opinions on the project from the perspective of biological conservation. Professor Hakoyama participated in this conference as a River Environment Conservation Monitor (Fish), contributing to the challenges of regional watershed management. During the meeting, the team inspected the planned construction site for fiscal year 2021 and the candidate site for public logging, and exchanged opinions at the Chikuma River Office in Nagano City. The photo shows the larvae of a Chinese swallowtail butterfly feeding on Japanese arborvitae on the bank of the Chikuma River, which was observed that day (identified by river environment conservation monitor Noguchi Ken). Japanese arborvitae is listed as endangered by the prefectural government, and the Chikuma River Office is weeding the plant for its protection.
