On Sunday afternoon, January 30, 2022, the founding meeting of the “Association to Recover the Blessings of the Chikuma River,” organized by Ueda City, Chikuma City, Tomi City, Sakaki Town, Kamiko Fishery Association, and Koshoku Fishery Association, with the aim of restoring the natural environment of the Chikuma River, was held. Professor Hiroshi Hakoyama attended the founding meeting and gave a speech entitled “The Blessing of Chikuma River: Why are Fish Declining?・ He gave a lecture on the role of the Institute of Freshwater Biology and the University in light of the blessing of the Chikuma River and the development of the city. It is still not clear why fish are declining, so it is necessary to deepen our understanding through research. The Institute of Freshwater Biology will listen to the voices of the local community and provide expert advice based on ecology. In addition, it aims to contribute to environmental protection and river management through research results.
