General Courses Using Institute of Freshwater Biology Features Begin!

IFB

As a general course that takes advantage of the characteristics of the Institute of Freshwater Biology, “Laboratory Course in Freshwater Biology (from the second year)” will be newly offered in 2023, taught by Professor Hiroshi Hakoyama, Visiting Associate Professor Leanne Faulks, and Assistant Professor Sakie Kodama. In this lab, students will learn how to collect and identify aquatic organisms, observe morphological traits, measure ploidy, and analyze genomes as part of an intensive summer course at the Institute of Freshwater Biology, with the goal of understanding organisms from an evolutionary perspective. Students also learn practical statistical methods, such as basic t-tests and linear mixed-effects models, by analyzing the data they collect. Starting this year, Professor Hiroshi Hakoyama and Assistant Professor Sakie Kodama from the Institute of Freshwater Biology will teach the required general course “Ecology” (from the first year), so we encourage all students to take this course.
