JR East to Work on Ayu Biology Research at Institute of Freshwater Biology!

IFB

From August to September 2022, JR East will be working on Ayu biologging research at the Institute of Freshwater Biology. Biologging is a method of attaching a small data recording device directly to an animal’s body to study the animal’s behavior and environment. JR East is working on ecosystem-conscious efforts to harmonize the river environment and water use, such as the environmental impact assessment of JR East’s Miyanaka Water Intake Dam on the Shinano River and the maintenance and management of fishways. This time, in collaboration with this institute, we will conduct experiments to understand the water temperature preferences of fish, assuming the water temperature environment downstream of the Miyanaka Water Intake Dam. The purpose of this project is to understand the water temperature preferences of fish and to accumulate knowledge that will contribute to the maintenance and improvement of the river environment from the perspective of river water temperature and fish habitat. The Institute of Freshwater Biology and JR East are considering further collaboration in the future.
