Satellite tagging surveys to be conducted in Miyazaki and Fukuoka this year!
This year, the Institute of Freshwater Biology (Research Assistant Chiaki Okamoto, Research Assistant Ishmerai Galang, Professor Hiroshi Hakoyama) is once again conducting a tracking survey of spawning migrations using pop-up tags using artificial satellites, funded by the Fisheries Agency Research Fund (Eel Unit). In addition to last year in Shizuoka, we released satellite-tagged silver eels (eels that begin to mature and fall into the sea) in Miyazaki on December 8, 2022 and in Fukuoka on January 8, 2023 and February 6, 2023. The boat was very bumpy when we went to the release site in the Genkai Sea, but the release went well. We won’t go into the details of the results here, but the results at both survey sites far exceeded previous tracking records. The surveys were conducted in cooperation with the Eel Unit Group at Kyushu University and the Miyazaki Prefectural Inland Waters Development Center.
