The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, River Erosion Control Technology Research and Development/General River Ecology Research Group (research leader: Professor Hiroshi Hakoyama) is conducting a study on the importance of habitat continuity in rivers - impact assessment and conservation measures for river ecosystems in the Chikuma River and Shinano River systems.

Fish migration occurs intensively in response to environmental changes such as seasonal changes and flooding. Information on fish migration is important for studying habitat continuity, which is the subject of this project. Therefore, Associate Professor Shoichiro Iio of the Faculty of Engineering, Shinshu University is developing an automatic real-time fish migration monitoring system that can distinguish fish species and sizes.

On May 2, 2023, Professor Iio and graduate student Toru Sakai began experimenting with a fish migration monitoring system in the waterways of the Institute of Freshwater Biology. The video footage is recorded in the cloud via the Internet, and we are working to build a system that uses machine learning to determine fish species.
