Ueda Agriculture and Water Rokkamura Weir Land Improvement District and other water users removed gravel from the tunnel!

IFB

On Tuesday, January 30, 2024, two members of the Institute of Freshwater Biology participated in the removal of gravel from the intake tunnel of the Institute of Freshwater Biology waterway that takes water from the Chikuma River. The water is taken from the Chinese side of the Shinkansen, and the main water users are the Rokkamura Weir Land Improvement District, the Ueda Prefectural Waterworks Management Office, and the Institute of Freshwater Biology of Nagano University. Water users, mainly from the Rokkamura Land Improvement District, cooperated to remove the gravel and silt that had accumulated in the tunnel. The work will be carried out during a two-hour water shutdown and is scheduled to take place over four days from January to February this year. At the Freshwater Research Institute facilities, we are working to preserve as many living organisms as possible in outdoor ponds and waterways that have been kept at low water levels to cope with this water shutdown.
