The 17th Meeting of the Informal Consultation on International Cooperation for Conservation and Management of Japanese Eel Stock and Other Relevant Eel Species was held at the Mita Conference Hall in Minato Ward, Tokyo (hosted by the Fisheries Agency) on Thursday, June 6 and Friday, June 7. Officials and researchers from Japan, China, South Korea and Chinese Taipei attended, as well as Professor Hiroshi Hakoyama and researcher Leanne Faulks from the IFB.

As a summary of the results, as posted on the Fisheries Agency website, the following points were agreed upon.

  1. Upper limit of glass eel stocking in ponds

The next two fishing seasons (November 2024 and October of the following year) will be the same as the current fishing season (21.7 tons for Japan).

  1. Joint Statement of the four countries and regions

Based on discussions and confirmations regarding compliance with the Joint Statement issued in 2014, a review of the management measures taken by each country and region since the Joint Statement, the upper limit of stocking in ponds for the next fishing season, statistics on glass eel catch and stocking in ponds and eel trade by each country and region, and the results of the third scientific meeting, it was agreed that Japan, China, South Korea and Chinese Taipei would jointly announce the results of the consultations.

  1. Other Business

The fourth scientific meeting and the 18th consultation will be held in Japan in May or June next year.
