Postdoctoral Researchers (temporary job)
Institute of Freshwater Biology, Nagano University - Nagano, Japan
The Institute of Freshwater Biology, Nagano University (https://ifb-research.jp) is seeking a trained postdoctoral researcher to work with a team on a study of resource management and conservation of Japanese eel and other related eel species. (Project leader: Professor Hiroshi Hakoyama). The project is supported by the Fisheries Agency of Japan and will last at least several years. The outcome of the project is expected to contribute to discussions at FAO, IUCN and CITES, and to the design and implementation of policies for the management of Japanese eel.
Roles & Responsibilities
(1) Researcher (international collaboration, fisheries science, ecology, behavior, biologging):
As a researcher in the Eel Unit, you will conduct research in Task Team 1 (Understanding Japanese eel resource trends) and Task Team 2 (Tracking eel spawning migrations using satellite pop-up tags) in international collaboration (https://ifb-research.jp/international/).
In addition, the postdoc should collaborate with lab and team members, write papers with collaborators, participate in team discussions, assist team members and the lab in any way, and perform other duties as assigned.

Employment Period
From 2025/04/01 to 2026/03/31. Employment period may be extended based on performance and availability of funds.
Regular Working Hours
8:30-17:15 (break time 12:00-13:00), Monday-Friday
Salary
330,000-470,000 yen per month (depending on research experience and performance). Absence deduction is calculated based on the amount of absence hours/days in accordance with the Labor Law.
Employee Benefits
The employee is required to enroll in the Japanese national social security (health) insurance and pay employment insurance in accordance with the laws of Japan. Part of the cost will be borne by the employee and will be deducted from the monthly after-tax salary each month on the payday (inquiry e-mail address: soumu@nagano.ac.jp).
Nagano University will pay the cost of the LCC ticket from your country to Japan at the beginning of the contract and the cost of the return ticket at the end of the contract.
